Influencer marketing in India: nano vs macro creators, costs and contracts
Follower counts lie. How to choose creators by audience fit, brief them properly, keep the rights and measure what came back.
Influencer marketing works when the creator's audience is your customer and the content feels like the creator's own. It fails when a brand pays for reach and gets a stiff ad read. Here is how to get the first kind.
Nano, micro or macro?
- Nano (roughly 1k to 10k followers). High trust, local reach, low cost, often happy with product-for-content. Great for restaurants, clinics, local stores and early D2C brands. Use many of them.
- Micro (10k to 100k). The sweet spot for most brands: real engagement, niche audiences, reasonable fees and professional content.
- Macro and celebrity. Broad reach for launches and awareness, high fees, lower engagement rates. Use when reach itself is the goal.
Pick creators by audience, not followers
Check where their followers live, their age and interests, real engagement (comments, saves), content quality and whether they already talk about your category. Ask for audience screenshots. Avoid creators with sudden follower spikes or comment sections full of bots.
The brief
Give the creator the goal, the key message, what must and must not be said, any offer code or link, the format and length, the deadline and the approval process. Then let them make it in their own voice. Over-scripted content underperforms.
Rights, disclosure and contracts
Agree usage rights up front if you want to run the content as ads or on your own channels, including for how long. Follow ASCI guidelines on disclosure: paid partnerships must be labelled clearly. Put deliverables, dates, exclusivity, payment terms and approval rounds in a simple written agreement.
Track every collaboration
Unique links or codes per creator, UTM parameters, Meta's partnership ad tools, and a simple tracker of reach, engagement, clicks, leads or sales and cost. Compare creators on cost per result, and keep the ones that deliver.
Turn creator content into ads
The best creator videos often work better as paid ads than polished brand films, because they look native in the feed. Run them through Meta with the creator's handle attached and compare against your own creatives.
