AI in digital marketing: what to automate and what to keep human

AI makes marketing faster. It does not make it good on its own. A working split between what to automate and what to keep in human hands.

Every marketing tool now has an AI button. Some of it saves real hours; some of it produces content that looks like everyone else's. After a year of using these tools across client accounts, this is the split we have settled on.

Automate: the repetitive and the quantitative

  • Bidding and budget pacing. The platforms' own AI (smart bidding, Advantage+) is better at real-time bid decisions than any human. Give it clean conversion data and sensible guardrails.
  • First drafts and variations. Ad copy variations, outlines, meta descriptions, subject lines and caption options. A human edits, chooses and adds the brand's voice.
  • Research and summaries. Competitor scans, review mining, keyword grouping and reading long reports.
  • Reporting. Pulling data from GA4, ads platforms and CRMs into dashboards, flagging anomalies and drafting the monthly narrative.
  • Creative resizing and simple edits. Turning one hero asset into many formats.

Keep human: judgement, taste and trust

  • Strategy and positioning. Deciding what the brand stands for and which channels matter cannot be outsourced to a model that has never met your customer.
  • Creative direction. AI generates options; a person decides what is on-brand, true and not embarrassing.
  • Anything that makes a claim. Facts, prices, results, health and finance content. Verify every number.
  • Customer conversations. Bots can handle FAQs; humans handle objections, complaints and closing.
  • Final sign-off. Nothing goes live without a person responsible for it.

The risks to manage

Generic content that reads like every other brand. Hallucinated facts and fake statistics. Over-automation that removes the point of view that made the brand interesting. Platform policies on AI-generated images and disclosures, which keep changing.

A practical workflow

Human sets the brief and the goal. AI drafts, varies and analyses. Human edits, decides and signs off. AI reports and flags. Human reviews the numbers and changes the plan. Faster, cheaper, and still yours.

We use AI tools across our content and performance marketing work in exactly this way, and we tell clients where it was used.
