How much does digital marketing cost in India? A plain guide for brands
Agency fee, ad spend, content, tools: a clear look at what you are paying for, and how to tell a fair quote from an expensive one.
Every founder asks it and few agencies answer it straight: what should digital marketing cost? There is no single number, but there is a clear way to think about it. Once you understand the four parts of the bill, you can compare quotes properly and spot the ones that are too good to be true.
The four parts of a digital marketing budget
- Ad spend. The money paid to Google, Meta, LinkedIn or YouTube to show your ads. It is usually paid directly to the platform from your own account and should never be mixed into an agency's fee.
- Agency or team fee. What you pay for strategy, campaign management, reporting and the people doing the work. Agencies charge a monthly retainer, a percentage of ad spend, a per-project fee or a mix.
- Content and creative. Shoots, design, video editing, copy and creators. Some agencies include a fixed amount of content in the retainer; others quote it separately.
- Tools and tracking. Analytics, CRM, email and WhatsApp platforms, landing page builders and scheduling tools. Small at first, but they add up as you scale.
Why quotes vary so much
Two agencies can quote very different fees for the same brief because they are not offering the same thing. Ask what is included: how many campaigns, how many creatives a month, who is working on your account, how often you get reports, and whether strategy and landing pages are part of the fee. A low retainer that excludes creative and tracking often costs more by the time the campaign actually works.
Retainer, percentage or project?
- Monthly retainer. Best for ongoing work across several channels. Predictable, and the agency has an incentive to keep you long term.
- Percentage of ad spend. Common for pure performance marketing. It scales with your budget, but check for a minimum fee and make sure the agency is not rewarded for spending more rather than spending better.
- Project fee. Right for one-off work such as a website, a brand identity or a launch campaign.
What a fair quote looks like
A fair proposal names the goal (leads, orders, bookings), the channels, what gets delivered each month, who your point of contact is and how results are reported. It separates ad spend from fees. It gives you ownership of your ad accounts, pages and data. And it is honest about timelines: paid campaigns can bring leads in weeks, while SEO and content take months.
How to decide your budget
Start from the business, not the platform. How much is a customer worth to you? How many customers do you need this quarter? What cost per lead or per order keeps you profitable? Those three numbers tell you roughly how much ad spend makes sense, and whether a given fee is reasonable against the revenue it should bring.
